Tanapa to draw boundaries for Mkomazi Game Reserve

Mkomazi Game Reserve
Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) through Mkomazi Game Reserve has started implementing an inclusive project in Kalalani and Mkota villages surrounding the game reserve which will among other things clarify the areas boundaries in a bid to end the ongoing land disputes.

The project will help the villagers who are also small scale miners to end on going land disputes around the mines.
Speaking in an interview with The Guardian over the weekend, Senior Park Warden for Mkomazi Game Reserve Malima Mbijima said that they have started educating wananchi and will collaborate with Korogwe Rural district Council to ensure the project is a success.
On their side, residents (small scale miners) say their rightful land areas are been invaded by the game reserve expansions. They admit that the encroachment is due to the fact that they don’t know their boundaries and so they too welcome the programme that will help clarify the boundaries.
“This programme will be very useful to us because we will now know for sure all the boundaries … we were being taken to the police everyday for allegedly conducting mining activities in Mkomazi Game Reserve yet we thought we were in our rightful areas,” narrated Omar Mzinga, a resident of Mkomazi.
Korogwe District Commissioner Mrisho Gambo said that the programme will help to resolve land disputes between farmers and pastoralists which has been chaos in the district.
Korogwe is among the districts facing many land disputes between farmers, pastoralists and other groups as well.
“The disputes are threatening lives of our people … we believe that this programme will help each wananchi know the boundaries and prevent more disputes,” Gambo said.
In a related development, Tanapa, through its social responsibility policy, has contributed 500 iron sheets for the construction of a laboratory and 31m/- for the construction of a dispensary in the area in a bid to improve healthcare services in the area
