Tanzania: Five Mara Villages Savour WMA 1.9 Billion Social Services Boost

Mara — KONA Wildlife Management Area (WMA) has provided 1.9 billion/- to five rural villages of Serengeti District in Mara Region, which was used in improving social services provision.
"We have been channelling the money through village accounts to support various projects in areas of education, health and water," Ikona WMA Chairman Mr Elias Chama, told the 'Daily News' in Mugumu, the capital of the Tanzanian wildliferich district, yesterday . He mentioned the beneficiary villages as Robanda, Park Nyigoti, Nyichoka, Makundusi and Natta.
The Ikona WMA was established by the five villages several years ago. "Since 2007 to date, we have spent more than 1.9bn/- on development projects in the villages. People are now seeing the benefits of wild animals as compared to the past," the Ikona WMA boss said.
The wildlife-rich WMA has eight serious investors, majority of them engaging on photographic tourism within the WMA which borders the world's famous Serengeti National Park and Ikorongo/ Grumeti Game Reserves.
The WMA is also scheduled to disburse 133m/- to the beneficiary villages any time from now, according to its secretary, Mr Stephen Makacha. Ikona is seen as a role model that has registered a number of admirable successes in the recent years.
It has also set the record of becoming the first WMA in the country to own a world classic visitors' centre with capacity of 300 people in western Serengeti. The WMA is one of the most potential areas for conducting photographic tourism in the western Serengeti.
It is blessed with a variety of beautiful species and fauna and it also forms an important part of the Serengeti eco-system.
