Zanzibar — ZANZIBAR Second Vice-President,
Ambassador Seif Ali Iddi, has advised investors in the tourism sector to
improve and increase tourist attraction sites in Zanzibar.
Ambassador Iddi made the appeal after visiting Bawe Leisure and
Changuu Leisure hotels, on two of the various Islets in Zanzibar, saying
that more attraction sites would increase the number of tourists
visiting the Isles and thus bring in more revenue.
He was on the islets to inspect the ongoing environmental
conservation efforts. Ambassador Iddi urged the management of the hotels
to make sure the conservation efforts succeed.
Flanked by other senior government officials, Ambassador Iddi was
informed that Bawe and Changuu environmental conservation project is
determined to have a sustainable tourism for the benefit of the current
and future generations.
He commended Bawe and Changuu investors for their conservation
efforts to keep the Islets safe from degradation and minimising the
negative impact of climate change.
"It is good that you are environmentally conscious," he said, as Mr
Freddy Tenga from the hotels said that the conservation exercise started
in 2002 and it has been successful.
Mr Tenga said that they have also been improving the standards of
their hotels alongside the environment, but noted thus: "Despite
awareness campaigns, some dishonest fishermen still destroy coral reefs,
one of the beauties of the sea which tourists love to see."
Mr Said Ali Mbarouk, Zanzibar Minister for Information, Tourism,
Culture and Sports said that his ministry has been encouraging both
local and foreign investors to take the issue of environmental
conservation serious.
According to the investors, 23m/- has already been spent on the
conservation projects in the two hotels, which include care and
protection of 132 tortoise on Changuu islet.
