A German tourist who has been
trapped on top of Mount Kilimanjaro after she and her guide went
to an unauthorized location has been rescued.
The Tanzania National park spokesman Mr. Shelutete confirmed that she
and the guide has been rescued by team of Kilimanjaro National park and
Other Tourism stakeholders.
Pascal Shelutete, spokesperson of the Tanzania
National Parks (TANAPA), said that Jean Traska, 32, and her tour
guide identified as Athman Juma went into a wrong location on
the mountain.
"In
collaboration with other stakeholders, officials of
Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA) rescued the two, who sneaked
into an area which is not allowed by the
authorities," he said, adding that instead of going
to Kibo peak they went into Mawenzi, where they
failed to realize their mission as a rope they used
was trapped in a rock.The tourist started climbing the mountain on
March 18 through Rongai route, "but with the
unknown reasons, the climber changed the route
and started getting into the Mawenzi peak,"
The TANAPA official further revealed that for
a tourist to be allowed to the Mawenzi peak, he
or she is supposed to fill in a special form
that allows him or her to go on with a trip.
Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest
mountain in Africa, is located in northern Tanzania
and around 200 miles south of the equator
The mountain has three peaks - Shira Peak at 12,999 feet (3,962
meters), Mawenzi at 16,893 feet (5,149 meters) and Kibo/Uhuru at
19,341 feet (5,895 meters).
Tourists are advised to adhere to kilimanjaro climbing guidelines and safety rules.
