HUNDREDS of Dar es Salaam residents on Saturday and Sunday, had a
date at Coco Beach, not for swimming nor fishing, but a shopping
festival.
Coco Beach is a popular spot in Dar es Salaam for sea-front or beach
side merrymaking, booze and music. However, this time, Tigo has
sponsored the weekly Kariakoo shopping festival that began at the
weekend.
It is like killing two birds with one stone as customers enjoy
themselves and do their shopping, Ms Irene Mwamfupe, an entrepreneur,
told the Business Standard.
"This is a great opportunity for people who come to relax at the
beach, but it is even a greater chance for us as we get to have fun, do
business, access new customers and create new contacts as well," she
said.
She added that Tigo has created the opportunity for business people
to explore new and different ventures which will help in the growth of
their business.
"Kariakoo is a crowded and bustling place. This is the opportunity
for people who for one reason or the other are not comfortable with
crowds, to go to the beach," added Ms Mwamfupe.
On the other hand, Ms Neema, a business woman from Kariakoo said that
the shopping festival has created employment opportunities for the
youth.
She said they were expecting more shoppers as the festival continues.
Ms Victoria Kimaro, one of the customers said: "It is a fun way of
shopping as the place is not as crowded as Kariakoo.
"I can relax while doing my shopping as I get to enjoy the beach at
the same time and avoid the stressful paths of Kariakoo," said Ms Kimaro
