Bank of Tanzania announces record tourism earnings

Constituting an increase from the previous year of nearly 12.3 percent, the Tanzania tourism industry has become the largest foreign exchange earner after gold incomes fell significantly as a result of lower world prices for the commodity.
Information from the Bank of Tanzania confirms that the country earned nearly US$2billion from tourism receipts in the year between July 2013 and June 2014. The figure of 1.973 billion is contained in the monthly BoT publication “Monthly Economic Review” which the Central Bank publishes with updates on Tanzania’s economic performance data and related information.
The details were released as Tanzania’s tourism industry prepares for the inaugural Swahili Tourism Trade Fair in Dar es Salaam, which is due to take place from October 1-4 at the Mlimani City Conference Centre. The Tanzania Tourist Board alongside the private sector will showcase at the trade fair the country’s wide range of tourism attractions, from the islands of Mafia over Unguja and Pemba to the national parks and game reserves on the mainland.
