Tanzania Jambo Festival on arts, culture and tourism

The French Embassy in Tanzania is all out to support the annual Tanzania’s mainland premier international festival as it seeks to unlock the potential of arts and culture.
Credited as the second biggest arts and cultural fête in Tanzania after Sauti za Busara in Zanzibar Isles, the carnival officially known as the Jambo Festival has all along been focusing on the promotion of fine arts and culture.
"The French embassy is sponsoring the Jambo Festival for the first time this year. This event provides an opportunity for artists to showcase their talent and access trade opportunities,” said the French Embassy in Tanzania attaché for Cultural, Higher Education & Scientific Affairs, Juliette Lebreton.
Ms. Lebreton said the Jambo Festival also fosters networking and partnerships among entrepreneurs, and promotes peace and respect through the arts and culture celebration.
“This kind of carnival is where people come in one place, at one time, enabling the artists, and arts and music lovers from the world to celebrate culture,” she said in a statement.
The French embassy believes the Jambo Festival also ambitiously seeks to revitalize the social and cultural life of Arusha City and its suburbs and boosts to the local economy.
This festival will provide a venue at one point for entertaining, community building, business generating, and a space in which adverse and hopefully a large audience will learn, appreciate, sell, and acquire art, she explained.
“The Embassy of France is proud to associate with this Tanzanian festival for the first time," Ms. Lebreton concluded.

Commenting, Chairman of the Jambo Festival, Augustine Namfua, said the support from French Embassy in Tanzania is highly appreciated as it comes at the opportune time, given the fact that the three-year-old carnival is growing by leaps and bounds.
“I’m humbled with the overwhelming support from French embassy. With this surprising great boost, I can confidently declare that this year’s Jambo Festival will be the most successful, and our fans will never regret as they will get a lifetime experience,” Mr. Namfua boasted.
Initially, he said, the Jambo Festival has been enjoying technical and logistic support from the Alliance Française in Arusha since the show’s inception.
Slated for Friday, October 3, to Sunday, October 5, 2014, in Tanzania’s northern safari capital, Arusha, this year’s carnival has already received overwhelming response from across the globe as organizers say it will eclipse last year’s participation.
So far, confirmations indicate the event will attract nearly 3,000 people compared with last year where the carnival only managed to attract some 2,200 participants from within and outside the country.
Organized by Idea Africa, the 2014 festival will have some major makeovers compared with its predecessors that focused on setting new standards and levels.
“Unlike the past events, Jambo Festival 2014 will prominently feature live, on-stage music concerts each evening or night of the festival,” said Namfua.
With performances from both local and internationally-renowned artists, this gig is expected to be a crowd puller and a real boost to the vendors, sponsors, and the entire festival.
The live music concerts during the festival certainly means that the event will have to continue until the wee hours of the night.
“Music is another form of art, and at Jambo Festival, we are dedicated to advocate love, peace, and unity through it,” Mr. Namfua explained, adding, “A well-lit and secure venue, arts exhibitions, and food availability guarantee long stay of the visiting crowds.”
Arusha is dubbed the ‘Nyama-Choma Hometown,’ and it is with this reality that barbeque stalls have been introduced to attract visitors to the festival for exhibitors, performers, and most importantly, the sponsors.
“Like the previous two events, this year’s festival will also have an artisan’s market, loads of traditional dances (ngomas), a street parade, and the fashion event - the Jambo Fashion Affair,” he noted.
In making sure all major art categories are covered, the festival has an exclusive fashion event, the Jambo Fashion Affair.
The Jambo Fashion Affair has become the premier event for designers to showcase their products in Northern Tanzania after the successful two editions in 2012 and 2013.
At least 8 designers will showcase an array of African trends, designs, and styles on Saturday night at the Mount Meru hotel alongside with selected jewelers to sparkle up the event.
Santuri DJs and a special guest artist will continue to perform until the late hours after the fashion show, where people would buy tickets.
The carnival will have at least 2 international performing artists, and for the first time in Arusha, the beauty of fashion will be intertwined with an international concert.
The artists will continue to perform until the late hours after the fashion show.
The third-edition will also be held at the new and more spacious Nane grounds in the upper-suburb of Njiro, nearly three kilometers southeast of Arusha heart.
According to Mr. Namfua, the new grounds are spacious, suitable for parking, secure, purposely designed for events, and has reliable power sources and back-up in case of emergency.
