Tanzania takes a painstaking move on tourism development

Looking to attract more visitors and tourism investments in Tanzania’s fast-growing tourism industry, the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) has officially launched an annual, international tourism exhibition, the second largest travel trade gathering in Africa.
The ambitious Swahili International Tourism Expo (SITES) will be held for the first time in early October of this year, and the event is expected to attract a large magnitude of tourist players from across the world.
Dedicated to topical tourism, sustainability, and conservation in Tanzania and the rest of Africa, the SITES event will be held from October 1-4 at the posh Mlimani Conference Centre in Tanzania’s capital city of Dar-es-Salaam, organizers told eTN.
Tanzanian Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Mr. Lazaro Nyalandu, launched the SITES website last weekend to signify the official launching of the event.
SITES is the first international tourism expo developed by the Tanzania Tourist Board. The TTB has appointed Pure Grit Project and Exhibition Management Ltd. of South Africa to partner with them.
According to the organizers, SITE 2014 will focus on inbound and outbound travel to Africa and is expected to draw hundreds of tourism and travel professionals from all over the world.
“It is expected that the Swahili Tourism Fair will grow and eventually become as famous as the INDABA of South Africa and will hence be the iconic annual event for travel and tourism promotion in Tanzania,” said the Tanzania Tourist Board senior official.

Planning for the SITES exhibition has taken cognizance of the continued existence of the Karibu Travel and Tourism Fair (KTTF) which has been running in Tanzania since the year 2000, and the need to ensure that the two fairs complement each other.
The Karibu Fair, which is held in Tanzania’s northern tourist city of Arusha each June, focuses on the East African regional market, while the Swahili Tourism Fair will be held in October each year and will exclusively focus on international clientele.
The SITES event is the result of a good relationship and the interaction between these two parties – the Tanzania Tourist Board and Witch and Wizard - that have decided to cooperate in establishing it.
Organizers, said, however, the benefit of hosting such an event in Tanzania will be an advantage to create awareness of Tanzania to international travel and tour operators around the globe, while giving a greater chance for Tanzanian tourism stakeholders who had never attended other international travel and tourism fairs to meet with foreign tourism stakeholders.
