Kenya: Conferences to Improve Counties' Tourism Docket

Counties have been urged to use conventions and meetings to market tourist destinations.
Kenyatta International Convention Centre managing director Fred Simiyu said conventions are the new way of attracting tourists.
Simiyu was speaking at the Bungoma county headquarters yesterday.
He signed an accord with the county government to market the county as a tourist destination through the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Events programme.
Simiyu said investor conferences and trade fairs open up the counties to foreign visitors.
He said last year Kenya had an income of about Sh22.6 billion from meetings alone.
"We have seen a 22 per cent increase in meetings and conventions," said Simiyu.
In the accord, the two parties are expected to partner in developing MICE programmes, with KICC providing technical support.
Governor Ken Lusaka said the county has started rehabilitating major tourist destinations in the county.
Lusaka said the building of a museum for community heroes is on track.
