Best Kept Secret_Mahale Mountains: More Than A Place To See Chimpanzees

Not too many people think about chimpanzees when planning a Tanzanian safari, but as anyone who has visited a habituated group knows, it’s an experience on par with most big game encounters.
Also, it’s nice to have a bit of variety from the savannah now and then. Most people visit our closest living relative in tiny Gombe National Park, where Jane Goodall did her pioneering research, but if you have the time and/or money, remote (boats and chartered planes are the only way to get there) Mahale Mountains National Park is a far better choice.
With ever-green mountains and white sand beaches hugging Lake Tanganyika, the scenery is sublime and the quiet isolation makes it a world-class wilderness getaway. The few lodges are rarely full and at times you could literally be the only guests in the entire park
