The first fastjet flight between Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and Lusaka
in Zambia was completed on Saturday, February 1, the company said.
It comes after the firm first joined the ranks of international
carriers last October with its first flight between Dar es Salaam and
Johannesburg, in South Africa.
On the latest route, Ed Winter, interim chairman and chief executive,
said that aided by the Tanzanian and Zambian governments, the firm had
"added momentum to fastjet's vision of democratising air travel on the
African continent".
"We believe that this will lead to more affordable fares and greater
cost efficiencies for passengers, businesses and governments."
Tickets for the flights went on sale in December last year, with
fares currently starting as low as US$75 one-way, excluding airport and
government taxes - significantly lower than fares charged by other jet
aircraft operators who currently only offer non-direct flights between
the two cities, the company said.
Recently, fastjet revealed it is in discussions with the Zambian
government over establishing a Zambian-registered fastjet operation that
would offer both domestic and international flights from Lusaka.
"The business and political environments in Zambia are very progressive and our discussions to date have been very positive.
"The aim of our operation would be to promote trade and tourism, to
increase and improve on safety and reliability within the Zambian
aviation industry, and to create employment opportunities," said Winter.
