Tanzania: Police in Zanzibar Assure Tourists On Security During Election

POLICE in Zanzibar has assured tourists and investors of security, saying Zanzibar Islands will remain peaceful during the whole process of elections and beyond.
Commissioner of Police (CP) - Zanzibar, Mr Hamdan Omar Makame, said tourists visiting the islands and investors should not worry about security, as the elections day gets closer.
"We wish to assure residents, tourists and investors that Zanzibar is safe and the peaceful atmosphere will be maintained during elections," Mr Makame said.
Mr Makame said that his forces and intelligence are on full alert in all public places and tourist attractions to ensure that tourists continue enjoying their stay in Zanzibar.
The CP made the assurance in a series of meetings with investors in the Islands which were organised by the Zanzibar Association of Tourist Investors (ZATI), in efforts to clear doubts about security as the country ahead of elections.
Tourism contributes greatly to Zanzibar's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), estimated 27 per cent annually and the government has been working hard to make sure that the tourism sector, which also employs many youth, thrives.
ZATI chairperson, Mr Omar Said, informed participants in the meeting that his association is confident with the police in keeping the islands safe during and after the much-awaited elections next month.
"We appreciate efforts being taken by government and police in maintaining peace and stability." Mr Said thanked the authorities, adding that everyone has a role in making sure that Zanzibar remains stable.
